More about our walks

New Forest Ramblers on a group walk

You are very welcome to walk with the group. Walks are led by volunteers. You can expect company, a chat, and people who know the Forest. Start points, maps and leader contacts are on the walks programme.

Joining a walk

Booking

No booking is needed for most walks: just turn up. If a walk does need booking, that is shown clearly in the walk details, with the leader's mobile number.

Start times

Walks leave promptly, usually at 10:00. Please arrive 15 minutes early so you can change into boots (for example 09:45 for a 10:00 start).

What to bring

Paths and kit

Forest paths are uneven and often muddy. Wear walking boots and bring a waterproof. Most of our walks start where there are no public toilets.

There is a drinks stop on every walk; bring a drink. Longer walks (Wednesdays and Sundays) have a lunch stop, so bring a picnic.

In case of emergency

Carry ICE details: a card, a key fob, or on your phone. You can get an ICE card from the leader at the start. Fill it in with a permanent marker as soon as you can, and keep it easy to reach so the leader and emergency services can use it.

Practical notes

Weather and phones

In snow, ice or heavy continuous rain, phone the leader to check the walk is still on. Walks take place at the leader's discretion.

Leaders will do their best to answer, but there is no mobile reception in some parts of the Forest. Once they have left home they will not pick up a landline.

Cars and dogs

Lock the car and do not leave valuables in it.

Dogs must be kept on a short lead and not run among walkers' feet. Extra restrictions, if any, are shown in the walk details.
