# Leading a walk

Our programme depends on volunteer leaders. We are fortunate to have such an enthusiastic band of them, and we always need new leaders to keep it going.

## The programme

#### Typical walks

Walks can be booked with our [walks coordinator](https://new-forest.ngx-ramblers.org.uk/contact-us?contact-us&role=walks&redirect=walk-leaders).

- Long walks (10 to 11 miles) on Sundays and/or Wednesdays
- Short walks (5 to 6 miles) on Saturdays
- Gentle Pace Walks (3 to 4.5 miles) on alternate Tuesdays

Occasionally there are walks on other days. The usual start time is 10:00.

#### Special events

We welcome special events: also see our [social programme](https://new-forest.ngx-ramblers.org.uk/social). These do not have to fit the usual days and times.

We can change start times, for example where there are bus or ferry times to consider.

Before Covid we ran 5 walks a week. A shortage of leaders since lockdown has made that harder to keep up.

## New leaders

#### How to start

Ramblers online leader training is the first step. To access it, [contact the walks coordinator](https://new-forest.ngx-ramblers.org.uk/contact-us?contact-us&role=walks&redirect=walk-leaders).

Most new leaders find it is not that difficult, and very satisfying. There are plenty of people on hand to help.

#### Routes and recce help

If checking a walk on your own puts you off, experienced walkers are happy to come with you.

If you need a route, start with a walk from our [walk books](https://new-forest.ngx-ramblers.org.uk/books), talk to more experienced walkers, or look at [resources for walkers](https://new-forest.ngx-ramblers.org.uk/walk-leaders/resources-for-walkers).
